Description
Challenge
The customer had the need to inspect the entire inside of their composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPV), including their 1.09” diameter entry point. The inspection needed to detect any corrosion, debris and/or staining on the entire inside of the COPVs. The inside was low-light so illumination was needed.
The challenge was to fit an entire HD camera with LED lights through a 1.09” entrance hole, and once inside, be able to articulate the camera to ensure 100% inspection of the entire inside surfaces of the COPVs.
Solution
Research
No research was required in this effort because the customer provided a sample COPV to be used in proving design. It was apparent that a wand-like inspection system was ideal for this application.
Troubleshooting
Initially a forward view angle camera was used, and It was found that a right-angle view was required to ensure 100% inspection coverage for the inside COPV. Also, it became apparent that after repeated inspections, the threaded neck of the COPV was going to slowly damage the articulating camera wand. An extra effort to make a neck fixture was needed.
Testing
A sample “scrap” tank and drawing were supplied to InterTest for fit. The wand was test-fit for size as well as picture and illumination. Video inspection showed that 100% of the inside of the COPV was visible
