  • THE CHALLENGE

    THE CHALLENGE

    Foreign Object Search and Retrieval (FOSAR) is an intense operation that typically utilizes a borescope and retrieval tool to locate and retrieve foreign object debris (FOD).

    The simultaneous operation of each tool leaves the operator lacking the necessary dexterity to perform both tasks effectively. Additionally, longer length retrieval tools require a more robust mechanism to open and close jaw sets. Industries performing high-stakes FOSAR operations mandated the need for a locking retrieval tool handle.

    DEVELOPMENT & INNOVATION

    InterTest based the design on the intuitive plunger handle of the iGrab™ Manual Retrieval Tools. The handle needed to feature a simple way to detach, allowing the operator to back-feed the retrieval tool into the working channel of a video borescope.

    Additionally, it had to allow the compact coiling of longer-length retrieval tools, also accommodating various retrieval tool jaw types and their adjustable cable spring settings.

    THE SOLUTION

    The solution became the iGrab™ Retrieval Tool Locking Actuator Handle. The locking function ensures that once the FOD is grabbed, it stays securely in place, eliminating the risk of accidental drops and increasing overall efficiency of FOSAR opeartions.

    The detachable feature of this handle also allows retrieval tools with jaws larger than the inner diameter of the guide tube to be backed through the guide tube. This way, operators can retrieve more substantial FOD in one pass.
